One in the Jungle 1995
Goldie, DJ Rap, Roni Size, Kenny Ken, Shy FX, A Guy Called Gerald and Brockie carried jungle onto Radio 1 without sanding off its pirate-radio edge.
If you were used to chasing jungle around the pirate dial, hearing it land on Radio 1 in 1995 was a proper moment. The BBC gave the music a national slot, but the shows still leaned into the DJs, MCs and pirate-radio style that made the scene feel alive.
The first regular run
Jungle takes a Friday-night national slot
One in the Jungle did not suddenly make jungle respectable — the scene was already massive on pirates, tapes and raves. What it did was put that sound onto national radio without completely ironing out the way jungle radio worked. The shows were pre-recorded, but they were built to feel like pirate broadcasts, with the featured DJs bringing MCs into the mix rather than presenting sterile studio sessions.
The regular run kicked off with Goldie and MC GQ on 20 July 1995, then DJ Rap, Roni Size, Kenny Ken, Shy FX & DJ Ash, A Guy Called Gerald and Brockie followed. That is a serious snapshot of where jungle was in 1995 — different corners of the scene all being heard by people who might never have found Kool, Weekend Rush or Dream FM on the dial.
The Shy FX & DJ Ash set is listed here as 17 August 1995. Its Mixcloud address says 3 August, but the independent One in the Jungle programme chronology gives 17 August.
The DJ Ron & MC Strings tape is a nice oddity in the collection. It survives as an unbroadcast pilot, so it belongs with the story but not inside the regular 1995 broadcast run. Better to keep that distinction than pretend everything in the folder went out on air.
